Patent Agents/Engineers

Every new agent or engineer is assigned a “Mentor” who is responsible for initial work assignments and early professional development. Aside from day-to-day training received from partners and senior associates, the firm conducts weekly training during its Monday and Thursday lunch meetings. In addition, the firm supports attendance at outside seminars pertaining to intellectual property and technology law topics. The firm also believes that it is useful to the development of patent practitioners to visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C.

In addition to ongoing informal feedback, agents and engineers are given one formal progress evaluation each year and a scheduled “informal” evaluation meeting mid-year. Although not required, it is encouraged that engineers prepare for the Patent Bar examination and become patent agents. Likewise, the firm is supportive to agents who desire to attend law school while employed at the firm. Reduced work requirements and financial assistance can be extended to agents while attending law school.

Our compensation system combines the necessity of efficiency in completing a high standard work product along with a billing threshold lower than most firms. Agents and engineers are paid a percentage of their collected billings. Additional bonus compensation can be earned by exceeding certain billing thresholds. With our annual minimum billing threshold of 1,500 hours, agents and engineers can enjoy competitive earnings with their peers, while having more time available for pursuing professional development and personal interests outside the office.

Although agents and engineers are not eligible for partnership, they can still play a vital role in the management of the firm by participating in a variety of administrative functions. Also, compensation will continue to increase commensurate with experience and efficiency.
